I headed off at 7 o’clock on another fine day and decided to walk the back road to Inveroran rather than climb the hill. It was a little further but probably quicker and it was a very pretty route. I bought some breakfast things at the Inveroran shop and headed onwards across Rannoch Moor. The Highlands were at their very best, beautiful scenery on all sides. There were also many other walkers to chat to which made for a very pleasant morning. I hope that the photos tell their own story.

As I walked down to the Kingshouse Hotel, I became aware that runners were starting to go past. This was the annual West Highland Way race, which starts at 1 am on the weekend closest to the summer solstice. The runners I was watching had gone 70 miles in 12 hours. I would continue to see the runners as I walked for the rest of the day.
After some nourishing but rather expensive, lentil soup, I set off to Kinlochleven. I took a slow, but steady, approach to climbing the Devil’s Stair getting wonderful views at the top. There followed the long descent to the town, again in glorious sunshine. I arrived, refuelled, and walked on, getting tired now, to climb the long hill to leave Kinlochleven and to find a camp.

At the bottom of the hill, Grace was sitting in her tent. They had passed me while I was in the pub. Sarah had gone off to find water somewhere. I was tempted to pitch up there but it was very midgy, so soldiered on until I finally emerged from the forestry to an extraordinary view over the glen. This was the place. I pitched camp and sat outside my tent as runners continued to walk and sometimes run past on their last leg towards Fort William.

Day Summary

Beautiful photos Henry. Weather looks amazing, hope the midges are not eating you alive!!!
The midges certainly took an interest along the West Highland Way but now seem to be seeking younger, more succulent flesh. No issues since Gairlochy.
Wow. Stunning. And the photos of the scenery weren’t bad either.
Steady now.
Wonderful to have Rannoch Moor in the sunshine. Great shot of Ben Nevis.
