I’ll probably not know the answer to that question until I’m underway. However, I think I know the answer to most of the important questions.
Do I know where I am going?
Yes. I have mapped out a general route, focusing almost exclusively on national trails. This makes the walk longer, at about 1200 miles, but means I’ll be visiting lots of places where I’ve never walked before as well as some, like the Pennines, where I have a little experience. Happily, the first 10 days or so will be along the South West Coastal Path where it’s virtually impossible to get badly lost.
Do I have the right gear?
I already have most of the equipment I need, all bought when backpacking the coast to coast walk a couple of years ago. I bought some additional clothing, all of it lightweight and breathable anticipating lots more sunny weather. My favourite new purchase is the pair of Patagonia baggies featured in the photo. My daughters are not very impressed with this latest fash-fail. They didn’t cheer up to find that Patagonia guarantee their shorts for life and I’ll be wearing them for ever.
Where will I stay?
