Day 5: Bedruthan Steps to the Rumps

The best Shepherds Pie in the world

Waking after a lovely sleep by the Bedruthan Steps I packed up camp quickly, mindful that day trippers could arrive very early. It was a beautiful morning and I set off up the coast thinking about breakfast.

Early morning near Porthcothan

Another lovely morning, more wonderful views. After a couple of hours I arrived at Treyarnon Bay where I ordered a full Cornish at the YHA. After Treyarnon, mindful I had fallen behind my schedule I consulted the End to End trail book that Helen had given me which identified another shortcut across country to Padstow. I do love a shortcut.

Padstow was busy

Padstow was predictably busy so I didn’t linger and headed straight for the ferry to take me across to Rock, avoiding an 8 mile detour around the estuary. I’m not sure whether ferries are strictly allowed (they almost certainly aren’t). However, remembering my vow to be kind to myself I jumped on the boat anyway. I do like a ferry.

Hispi cabbage with Parmesan

Hordes of others crossed with me on the ferry seeking refuge in Rock, which was also busy. I went to the Mariners pub which was very well reviewed and the manager very kindly found me a quiet spot in the otherwise heaving hostelry. It was here that I finally found the time to publish day 1 of my blog. I vowed to update daily from that point (I failed). I was then served the best shepherds pie I had ever eaten, pictured on the front of this blog, together with a wonderful dish called Hispi Cabbage.

View of the estuary from Rock

At about 3pmI set off once more past Polzeith and around the dramatic Pentire Point and on to the Rumps. There was almost nobody on the trail. They were all in Padstow eating Rick Stein’s chips.

The Rumps

I took my time enjoying Pentire Point so it was already getting late as I passed the Rumps. I started looking out for a wild camping spot, although I had only managed about 16 miles that day.

Wild camping near the Rumps

I found a pretty good spot.

Day Summary

Took it easy, ate very well, having a lovely time.

The dehydrated stuff is good, but does get a bit old, particularly the apple porridge. Eat like a king!
