Day 9: Hartland Quay to Bucks Mills

View back to Hartland Quay

My sister Jo and I packed up our things at the cottage and then we drove to Hartland for breakfast . She then drove me to Hartland Quay, we said our goodbyes and I set off. By this time it was 11 o’clock so I had to get my skates on.

I climbed up and over several large hills and to lay down in the grass at the top of the highest to drink some water. I met a fellow Walker going in the opposite direction to me so we spent ages comparing notes on what was to come for us both. When I eventually set off again it was 1230 and had only walked a mile and a half.

I passed Hartland Point, continued on across fields and then woods towards Clovelly where Jo and I had visited on my rest day. I then met a chap who volunteered helping to maintain the coastal path. His job was to advise if there were problems along the route, felled trees, cliff edges falling away, that sort of thing. He told me there were a lot of felled trees to come for me in the next day or two. He was right.

This area of the coast is remote and there was no chance of food or drink until Clovelly which I reached at 5:15, just after the visitor centre shut. This meant I could go into the town without paying. Normally there’s a charge of about £10 to visit. I walked down the steep hill to the pub half way down the hill, had a pint and walked back up again. I then set off along a broad track which wound its way up the hill giving good views of the old fishing port below.

I continued on until about 8 o’clock when I spotted a nice place to camp. I hadn’t walked very far, about 14 miles, so I was getting behind my schedule. However, I’d had a nice day and met some interesting people. Talking to people is much more important than the schedule.

Day Summary

My laziest walking day so far. Must do better! Had a lovely time though.

Walking 14 miles and meeting interesting people sounds a good result. Monitoring, repairing etc footpaths is my plan for retirement so delighted you met someone industrious in this way.
